Railway transport industry is an independent special material production department, and a critical infrastructure of developing economy and improving people's material living standard. As the national economy continue to promote the growth of railway traffic, railway transport play an important position in the national economy's development, and is an important transporting mode for energy, mining and other important materials.
In 2008, China's railways transported about 1461.93 million passengers, increasing 144.89 million passengers and 11.0 persent compared with the previous year. Railway passenger turnover was 777.86 billion person-kilometers, with an increase of 56.135 billion person-kilometers and up 7.8%. Since the fourth quarter of 2008, the international financial crisis spread to the rail transportation industry. The railway sectors maintain the stability of bus passengers and strive to achieve the strategic objective of "customer replenishment for goods" by enhancing an urgency sense and increasing marketing efforts.
In 2009, China's railways transported 1521 million passengers, increasing 64.79 million passengers and up 4.4%; and about 3317 million tons of goods, higher than the target value by 96.74 million tons. Compared with 2008, the volume of railway freight transportation in 2009 increased 26.38 million passengers and up 0.8%.
In 2010, China achieved a high growth in railway passenger-cargo traffic volume and transportation income. China's railways transported 1680 million passengers and 3630 million tons of goods, up 9.9% and 9.3% represently over the previous year.
During the "Eleventh Five-Year" period, China's railway passenger-cargo traffic volume continued to increase, and economic development's quality significantly enhanced. The whole industry carried a total railway traffic of 7.28 billion passengers, 16.24 billion tons of cargo, 16.2 trillion ton-kilometers, representing increases of 35.9%, 42.9% and 42.2% than the year previous.
Between Jan. and May. 2011, China carried a total railway traffic of 1609.33 million tons of cargo, 762.79 million passengers, 40.1765 billion person-kilometers, representing increases of 7.8%, 11.7% and 8.6% than the same period of previous year.
"Twelfth Five-Year" is the key stage for China's railway modernization, China's railway transportation capacity will be improved significantly. In 2015, the national railway passenger traffic will reach 3 billion people, railway freight traffic will reach 4.8 billion tons, increased by 78.6% and 32.2% represently compared with 2010.
