The North American FHP motors aftermarket is highly commoditized resulting in low margins. As a result, a number of vendors have either sold their assets to stronger participants or phased out production of motors for the aftermarket.
• The prevailing credit crisis, due to the economic slowdown, is further exerting a downward price pressure on vendors who are increasingly offering favorable pricing and payment terms to their distributors. This affects their profit levels and reduces operating cash flow, thereby increasing the need for additional capital to finance business. Proliferation of low-cost imported replacement products, especially in case of window lift motors and engine cooling fan motors, is further diminishing margins.
• Vendors need to increase focus on efficiency improvements and product cost reduction initiatives to offset the impact of price pressures.
• A few Tier 1 suppliers are coping with the general economic slowdown by sharing some of the OEMs’ responsibilities of product development. Also called as "Tier One-Half systems integrators“, they are differentiating themselves by supplying a complete motor assembled unit instead of selling different parts of the assembly.
• Differentiation of their offerings through forward integration is the critical success factor in the growing, commoditized market. Thus the trend is shifting towards higher installations of unitized assembled units at the OE level, resulting in a higher demand for assembled window lift motor units as well as engine cooling assemblies rather than the motor per se, at the aftermarket level.
